Newborn and Baby Session

Neath Port Talbot Swansea Newborn Baby Photographer

My passion for newborn photography stems from a desire to provide every new parent with the opportunity to document their newborns first few days as well as turning images of their precious baby into fine art. My style for newborn photography is a little different from the rest of my photographic work. I take a minimalist approach by eliminating background distractions and implementing muted colours so your newborn is the primary focus of the image, in order to create the perfect newborn portrait.

Newborn portraits are different than any other portraits your new baby will ever have. Photographing in the first two weeks of life allows me to capture your baby’s newness. You will treasure these memories of just how little your baby was. The fuzzy hair, the squishy folds and the sleepy face.

Your newborn session is scheduled in advance, based on your due date. Once you have booked your session, it is a floating appointment. The final date and time gets set once you have had the baby. Previous clients have found it best to call before they leave the hospital, while they still have a little time to themselves. This way, the newborn session doesn’t get put off until the baby is a month or two, because by then, the baby has changed so much it is no longer possible to capture how they were when they were brand new.

Sessions will take about two hours but may take longer. Your baby’s session will be very relaxed and great care and patience is taken to ensure it is non-obtrusive for your baby and fun for mum and dad.

My photography sessions are taken in the comfort of your own home where you will have everything to hand for you and your baby. Rustic backdrops, floors, luxury blankets, muslin and many other earthly accessories are used along with a selection of props during the session to produce beautiful, natural and timeless portraits.

A huge range of the finest quality framed prints, canvases, fine art wraps and acrylic presentation products are available for you to choose from when you are ready to order your products. I also have amazing printed album products available with a wonderful range of covers and presentation cases.

When your photos are ready

When your photos are ready, I’ll be in touch to arrange a viewing at your home. This is when you’ll be able to order some fantastic quality products that will showcase your beautiful photographs on the walls in your home.

When we arrange a viewing date, please make sure anyone else is there that would like to see the products available and would like to order their own frames, canvases etc. This is the best opportunity for grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles as well as the parents as I’ll be able to offer advice to everyone and provide detailed information on all the products offered.

Payment for products ordered must be paid at time of ordering. Family orders can be made as one order or individually on the night. Depending on the products ordered, it can take up to 8 working days for your products to be delivered.

Some tips to make the most of your session

I will have many very carefully selected accessories with me but if you would like to use your own too, please show me so I can advise what would be most photographical.

Due to the nature of this amazing period of your newborns life, the most natural portraits are made with your baby in his or her birthday suit so it is important to have plenty of warm blankets available during the session. There are often little accidents so keeping clean and warm blankets will help during the session.

I also use the parents as backdrops for some great “hands holding baby” photos, so please have ready a black long sleeve top and black trousers / skirt (if possible) . This is optional and at your discretion.

Newborn sessions are not rushed. Your session may take two to three hours and sometimes even longer. Please make sure you do not arrange anything else for the day of your session. These are moments that will never be repeated. You will have time to nurse and change your baby, and I encourage small breaks to soothe your baby whenever it becomes necessary. Please remember there is no rush, if your baby needs longer during the session and it takes five hours, that is absolutely fine.

When doing poses where the baby is undressed, little accidents ‘do’ happen so please keep some baby wipes and a towel on hand for a quick clean up so we can continue our session once everyone is clean and comfortable again.

Things to do in the house before I arrive

  • Open all of the blinds and curtains and turn off all house lights. When I arrive, I will walk through the house looking for the best source of natural light to do the session. I will also need adequate space to setup the backdrops, place floors etc. and moving furniture is not uncommon and to be expected to maximise the best areas.
  • About an hour before your session, turn your house temperature up to approximately 80 degrees. Newborns love to be warm, especially when they are naked.
  • Please keep young children and other distraction that could cause startling loud noises out of earshot. I want to create a quiet atmosphere to keep your baby calm and asleep. I will bring a white noise CD with me to play in the background to help calm your baby and aid deep sleep.
  • Make sure your newborn is well fed and sleep when I arrive. Many images I take require your baby to be in deep slumber. Newborns tend to get upset at being undressed when they are cosy so please undress your baby, loosen the nappy and then swaddle in a warm blanket prior to feeding.
